Legal Gambling Options in Ukraine Are Almost Here
Ukraine is one step closer to officially legalizing gambling. The country’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a new gambling legislation draft. Today, we’re going to look at which legal gambling options in Ukraine may soon become available here.
Lawmakers here seem to realize how much revenue could be earned from the legalization of the gambling industry. While many countries in Europe work to restrict their gambling markets, Ukraine seems ready to embrace various forms of gambling. Here’s what’s happening right now.
Ukraine Ready to Legalize the Gambling Market
Ukraine’s government has banned all forms of gambling for more than a decade. In recent months, however, officials here have begun to change their stance on this industry. Many now believe that legal gambling options in Ukraine will help boost the country’s tourism industry.
Even the President of Ukraine is supporting this new measure. In August, President Volodymyr Zelensky told the media that he intends to open up casinos in certain areas of the country.
“We will legalize gambling, namely, the operation of casinos in five-star hotels, which will stimulate the development of the region’s tourism cluster near the Black Sea. We also want to grow together here. Therefore, we want to see Turkish businesses as our partners rather than competitors,” he said.
Zelensky is making it clear that he wants to boost tourism in the country’s Black Sea region. Tourism in the country has been down for years. Casinos are proven to help bring in tourists (look at Macau) and hope is that the government earns valuable revenue from these gambling venues, as well.
This week, government officials here took a significant step in opening the country’s gambling industry.
Officials Take Major Step to Approve Casino Gambling
As of now, it looks like the country is mainly focused on legalizing casino gambling. According to President Zelensky, lawmakers will open up casinos in five-star hotels. It’s reasonable to believe that these casinos will be able to offer all traditional casino games, including blackjack, poker, and slot machines.
As we already mentioned, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has recently presented to the government. The specific text of this draft bill has not been made public. It has been revealed that the bill will allow gambling “exclusively on the territory of hotels, with use of gambling equipment with software that meets international standards.”
According to several Ukrainian news sources, gambling operators will be required to pay a $1.5 million licensing fee to run a casino here. Companies will have the option to apply for a sports betting, slot, and table games license.
Interestingly, government officials credit the rise of illegal slot machines for this new stance on gambling. Prime Minister Alexei Goncharuk recently revealed this to the media.
“You know what’s going on: you go outside, you see these slot machines, next to the pawnshops. I don’t think we need to explain what the problem is. A lot of people are suffering from this and we want to protect people who are addicted, because people then have depression, suicides, families are destroyed, people lose money. These are tens of thousands of broken human lives, and we want this to end in Ukraine. There should be no such thing in civilized countries.”
Approval of this bill is a big deal. It proves that the government is serious about its intentions to allow legal gambling options in Ukraine. Here’s what we know will be coming to this country.
What Legal Gambling Options in Ukraine Will Become Available?
Based on new reports, the government here seems willing to legalize various forms of gambling. Casino gambling is priority number one. Companies will also be able to offer sports betting options and slot machines.
These new gambling venues will begin opening in the country’s Black Sea area. At least one major casino will likely open in the city of Odessa. This city is extremely popular with tourists and would benefit greatly from opening a new casino.
Unfortunately, the government isn’t showing an embrace of the online gambling industry. It’s well-known that many of the top online gambling sites in Europe are available in Ukraine. Technically, however, playing through these websites is illegal. As you might expect, many residents choose to gamble online anyways.
Several new legal gambling options in Ukraine are on the way. When exactly, these new gambling venues will open is still unknown. Make sure to stay tuned for more Ukraine gambling news over the next few months!
