Astros, Dodgers, Yankees Favored to Win 2019 World Series
Following a historic regular season, the Houston Astros will enter the 2019 MLB playoffs as the prohibitive betting favorites to win the World Series. Most sportsbooks have the Astros listed around +200 to capture their second championship in the last three years. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who have appeared in back-to-back World Series, are close second-favorites around +250, while the New York Yankees have the third-best odds at +400.
The Astros won a franchise-record 107 games during the regular season, thanks in large part to the combination of a star-studded pitching staff and one of the most prolific offenses in the history of the game.
Houston Not Favored Everywhere
Though, not all sportsbooks have Houston as the favorite. Caesars Sportsbook has the Dodgers listed with slightly better odds, while DraftKings Sportsbook has taken more bets on the Yankees to win the World Series. Perhaps, it’s the fact that the majority of DraftKings Sportsbooks are on the east coast, while Caesars is Vegas-based, which is close to Los Angeles.
William Hill has reportedly taken some big bets on Houston. Back on April 21, William Hill reportedly made a $30,000 wager on the Astros to win it all this fall. Another $25,000 bet came in on the Astros in mid-May. Even with multiple large bets on the Astros, though, the sportsbooks are hopeful that Houston can ultimately win the title.
Tony DiTommaso, the risk manager for Las Vegas-based operator CG Technology, told ESPN’s David Purdum,
“The Dodgers and Astros are actually the best scenarios. I’ll take it.”
The Astros and Dodgers met in the 2017 World Series, which was ultimately won by the Astros in 7 games. Jeff Stoneback, the MGM sportsbook director, told ESPN,
“We would like the Astros to win it. We’re in a good position on them, and really, we should be OK as long as the Brewers or Twins don’t make it in there.”
While the Astros, Dodgers and Yankees have short odds, each of the other seven postseason participants are priced at +1000 or higher to win the ’19 Fall Classic. The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas has the National League East champion Atlanta Braves at +1000, followed by the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals at +1200. The AL Central-winning Twins are also at +1200, followed by the Washington Nationals (+1600), Oakland Athletics (+2500), Milwaukee Brewers (+3000) and Tampa Bay Rays (+3000).
The Nationals and Brewers will square off in the National League Wild Card Game on Tuesday night in Washington D.C. The winner will advance to the NLDS, where they will face the 2-time reigning NL champion Dodgers. The A’s and Rays will meet in the AL Wild Card Game the next night, and the winner of that game will move on to face the Astros in the ALDS, which begins on Friday in Houston.
The other series will pit the Braves against the Cardinals and the Yankees against the Twins.
The Astros will have the home-field advantage if they are alive in the postseason by finishing the regular season with the league’s top record (107-55). The Dodgers finished just behind the Astros at 106-56, while the Yankees (103) and Twins (101) also topped the 100-win plateau. The Cardinals’ 91 wins were good enough to win the NL Central, while the Cleveland Indians, who won 93 games, missed out on the American League playoffs entirely.
This marks the third consecutive season in which the Astros have won at least 100 games. Houston won the World Series in 2017, but they were beaten in the ALCS by the eventual champion Boston Red Sox last fall. Boston, of course, missed out on the postseason this year after a disappointing 84-78 regular season.
The Astros, Cardinals and Yankees are the only three teams in the 10-team field that have won a World Series this century. New York claimed championships in 2000 and 2009, while St. Louis won in 2006 and 2011. The Dodgers, despite back-to-back appearances in the World Series, still have not won it all since 1988. The Brewers and Rays, meanwhile, are the only franchises in the field to have never won a championship.
