Glorious Goodwood

Of the many flat horse racing events that take place during the British summer, Glorious Goodwood is one of the most popular, both with race-goers and horse racing bettors. The meeting includes a number of handicaps and some Group 1 races, and the racing is high-quality and hugely entertaining. Glorious Goodwood regularly attracts large audiences and is a particularly atmospheric race meeting. It takes place in late July and early August and usually features a number of the horses that have taken part in the Royal Ascot Festival held a few weeks earlier.

The Racecourse

Goodwood Racecourse is one of the most attractive locations for horse racing in the UK, situated just outside Chichester in England. The course has three main enclosures: Richmond, Gordon, and Lennox, which all have great views of the racecourse itself and scenic views over Sussex Downs. The track is quite unusual: there's a six-furlong straight that starts uphill before racing downhill, and a loop that has a number of sharp turns. It makes for some exciting racing. Goodwood was established as a racecourse in 1802 by the Third Duke of Richmond and is still controlled by the family today.

The Races at Glorious Goodwood

A total of 35 races are held at the Glorious Goodwood festival each year: the two most notable are the Sussex and the Nassau stakes. Both are Group 1 races, the highest grading for flat races in Great Britain. The Sussex Stakes take place on the second day of the festival and is open to Thoroughbreds of three years and older. It was established in 1841 and has been run over exactly one mile since 1878. The current prize pool is around £300,000. The Nassau Stakes takes place on the fifth and final day of the race meeting. Founded in 1840, its format has changed a few times over the years. Currently, it's only for Thoroughbred fillies and mares at least three years old, and it's just over a mile in length.

Also taking place during Glorious Goodwood, the Goodwood Cup features Ladies Day on day three. This Group 2 race is usually very competitive and one of the leading 2 mile races in Britain. It's the second leg of the Stayers' Triple Crown open to three-year-olds and over. It's one of the oldest races to take place during the festival, having been established in 1812. The prize pool is currently £100,000. Also on Ladies Day is the Richmond Stakes, a six-furlong sprint named after the founder of the Goodwood Racecourse.
